May brings spring to Oost

The latest Amsterdam East developments in May 2026 were dominated by practical preparations for construction, infrastructure and the opening of a new park. Spring literally brought the neighbourhoods to life.

Amsterdam East developments: construction projects currently underway

On 12 May, preparations began for the construction of homes, shops and a supermarket as part of Amstelkwartier Phase 3. At the same time, a new phase of construction got underway at Amstel Vista and the London Tower.

Major maintenance work on Linnaeusstraat has also been extended. From 25 May, the works area will be expanded to include the section up to Polderweg, with diversions in place for public transport. This forms part of the wider road renewal programme in Oost, which began back in 2025.

New Tagorepark on Strandeiland

Tagorepark opened on Strandeiland at the end of May. The new park provides space for sporting activities, live music and children’s programmes. For residents of Strandeiland and IJburg, it is a valuable addition to the public space and fits in with the neighbourhood’s green development.

Residents’ participation

From 21 May, residents of Watergraafsmeer were able to vote on the Oost Begroot plans. This gives residents a say in the projects carried out using the local budget. It is clear from May onwards that construction plans in Amsterdam-Oost are in full swing.
