The latest Amsterdam East developments in April brought a mix of concrete housing developments, a unique art project and a local alternative to King’s Day in Oost. Whilst the city was preparing for the big orange celebration, plenty was already happening in the eastern neighbourhoods.
Amsterdam East developments: upcoming housing projects
In early April, the council announced that at least 70 new mid-priced rental properties would be built in the Sluisbuurt, alongside private-sector housing, catering establishments and amenities on the Zuider IJdijk near the Waterplein. The project forms part of the sustainable and green development of the neighbourhood on Zeeburgereiland.
On 9 April, preparations began for the redevelopment of the Toorop building on Spaklerweg. The old office block is to make way for a modern complex comprising more than 600 homes, offices and local amenities. Two towers, 100 and 125 metres high, are set to become a landmark on the Omval. Construction is expected to begin in 2027.
New light art installation beneath the Lee Millerbrug
On 23 April, the winning design was announced for a light art installation beneath the Lee Millerbrug, which connects Centrumeiland with Strandeiland. The design is by the artist Sondi and depicts the non-human inhabitants of Strandeiland (plants and animals). The sculptures are inspired by the tradition of Amsterdam’s façade stones and form a kind of imaginary map of species and natural processes. The installation is scheduled for the winter of 2026–2027.
The Bredeweg Festival: a local highlight
On 26 and 27 April, the Bredeweg Festival took place in Amsterdam-Oost. This neighbourhood-focused event offered a small-scale alternative to the large King’s Day celebrations in the city centre, featuring street performances, theatre and community activities. The festival is popular amongst residents of the Indische Buurt and Watergraafsmeer neighbourhoods and highlights the strong sense of community in Oost.
